If some of the data in the default password files (/etc/passwd and /etc/shadow) should become corrupt for some reason, trouble's waiting; users might not be able to log on, file ownership attributes could get scrambled, and other horrifying things could happen. It's a wise administrator who periodically checks the integrity of password files. Happily, this is easy to do with pwck, a utility that's installed by default by most Linux distributions. To run pwck, switch to the root user, if necessary, type pwck, and press [Enter]; if you see no output, everything's fine. Should you see error messages, they'll explain what's wrong; perhaps there's a user with no corresponding home directory, or you've duplicate entries. If pwck detects an error, you'll be prompted to indicate whether you'd like to correct it.
