Administration: Users
- Question: How do I get to the users home page?
- Answer: From the administration directory, click on the "Users" link.
- Question: How do I navigate back to the Administration home page?
- Answer: There is a breadcrumb of links at the top. Click on the "Administration" link.
- Question: How do I add a user?
- Answer: From the users home page, click on the "Add a user" link under "Actions". You will be brought to the add page.
Fill out the textboxes with information about the user. Note that the "Fullname", "Password", "Password Confirmation", and "Email" parameters are
required. If you don't know something, just leave the textbox blank. Click on the "Add" button. If adding the user is successful, you will be
brought to that user's view page, where you can view the information you just typed in. Other wise, you will be brought back to the add page, and
there will red writing indicating what you have done wrong. In the case of the latter, fix the information in the particular textboxes and click
the "Add" button again.
- Question: How do I view a user?
- Answer: There are two ways to do this: 1) Get to the users home page. If you know the user's first name, last name, or
screen name, type it into the textbox and hit the "Search" button. You will be brought to another page with a list of users that match your search.
Clicking on one of those will bring you to that particular user's page. 2) Get to the users home page. Click on the "Show all users" link.
A list of all the users in the database will show up. Browse through that list and click on the user you want. Note that all users with the same
first and last name will show up on this list, so you may have to press the "Back" button in your browser if the user you select is not the correct
one.
- Question: How do I view a list of all the users?
- Answer: From the users home page, click on the "Show all users" link.
- Question: How do I hide the list of all the users?
- Answer: Click on the "Hide users" link.
- Question: How do I edit a user?
- Answer: First get to the user's view page. If you don't know how, read the answer to the "How do I view a user?"
question. Click on the "edit" link, which will bring you directly to the edit page. The user's current information will be displayed in the
textboxes. If you would like to modify anything, just change the text directly or fill in the blank textboxes with new information. Note that
you must fill in the "Fullname" and "Primary Email address" parameters. When you are satisfied with the user's information, click on the
"Update" button. If nothing goes wrong you will be brought to the user's view page. Other wise, you will be brought back to the edit page
with the problem(s) written in red. Fix the problem(s) and click on the "Update" button again.
- Question: How do I delete a user?
- Answer: First get to the user's view page. If you don't know how, read the answer to the "How do I view a user?"
question. Click on the "delete" link, which will bring you to a confirmation page that tells you the user has been deleted from the database.
You will no longer be able to access this user! So as a reminder, think twice before you click on the "delete" link.
- Question: How do I email a user?
- Answer: First get to the user's view page. If you don't know how, read the answer to the "How do I view a user?"
question. If you have an email program set up on your computer, then clicking on the email link will open up a new composer for you to write
the email in. Other wise, you can copy and paste the email address into your own mail program composer. Note that the user may have more than
one emails. If that is the case, the user's "Primary Email" is probably the one you want to email.
- Question: How do I visit a user's URL?
- Answer: First get to the user's view page. If you don't know how, read the answer to the "How do I view a user?"
question. If the user has a URL, it will show up next to the "URL:" label. Clicking on the URL link should bring you to the user's URL.
Other wise, you can copy and paste the URL into a browser and visit the URL that way.
- Question: How do I specify a user's ID number?
- Answer: You do not have to specifiy a user's ID number. When you add a new user, a unique ID number is
automatically assigned to this user.
- Question: How do I find out a user's ID number?
- Answer: You can find out a user's ID number by looking it up on the user's view page. If you do not know how to
get to the user's view page, read the answer to the "How do I view a user?" question.
- Question: Why does a user need an ID number?
- Answer: For your purposes, a user's ID number is probably not important, because you never have to use it to
perform any functions on the user. However, the database uses this ID number to store and pull out information about each user.
- Question: How do I change a user's ID number?
- Answer: Unlike the user's other information, the ID number is not something you can change. There probably
is no need for you to change it either. However, you can always delete the user and add a new user with the same information, which
will generate a random unique ID number for that new user.
- Question: How do I add another email for a user?
- Answer: Get to the user's edit page. If you don't know how, read the answer to the "How do I edit a user?"
question. There is no limit for the number of emails a user can have. On the edit page there is a textbox next to the "Additional
Email address" label. Type in an email and click on the "Update" button, which will bring you to the user's view page if the email
format you entered is correct. Next to the "Additional Emails" label the new email address you just entered should now appear. If you
want to add yet another email address, just repeat the process. All the additional email addresses you enter will appear on the view
page.
- Question: How do I show what groups a user belongs to?
- Answer: Get to the user's view page. If you don't know how, read the answer to the "How do I view a user?"
question. Click on the "Show direct group(s) membership" link, which will display all the groups, if any, that the user
belongs to. If you don't want to see the groups anymore, click the "Hide Groups" link.

- Answer: No, only users can be members of a group. However, a group can be a subgroup of another group.
- Question: How do I add a user to a group?
- Answer: Get to the group's view page. If you don't know how, read the answer to the "How do I view a group?"
question. Under the "Add new member" label, enter the name or screenname of the user you want to add and click on the "Search" button.
If there are any users by that name or screenname, they will be listed. Click on the user you want and that user will be added to the
group. Or if you decide you want to search for another user, click on the "Search Again" link and repeat the process.
- Question: How do I add a subgroup to a group?
- Answer: Get to the group's view page. If you don't know how, read the answer to the "How do I view a group?"
question. Under the "Add new subgroup" label, enter the name of the group you want to add and click on the "Search" button. If there
are any groups by that name, they will be listed. Click on the group you want and it will be added as a subgroup to your group. Or if
you decide you want to search for another group, click on the "Search Again" link and repeat the process.
- Question: How do I view the members of a group?
- Answer: Get to the groups home page. If you don't know how, read the answer to the "How do I view a group?"
question. Click on the "Show all direct members" or "Show all members" link. To hide the list of members, click on
the corresponding "Hide members" link.
- Question: How do I view the subgroups of a group?
